Lloyd Bernhardt and Kim Schachte came into the world of coffee sourcing with very unique perspectives. Lloyd, formerly a Business Vancouver 40 Under 40 recipient, and Kim, an award-winning graphic designer, traveled to Guatemala in 1999 to adopt their daughter. There they discovered a desire to improve the lives of families and farmers working in the coffee industry.
Ethical Bean Coffee was launched in 2003 on four central pillars: Fair Trade, Organic, Community-Minded, and Environmentally Aware - not to mention roasting and crafting a delicious cup of joe. To those ends, they have become Fair trade Certified and helped their farmers establish collectives that follow ethical labor guidelines. They are also uniquely Certified Organic Food Processors, meaning that they not only source organic beans, but they manufacture in a completely certified organic plant. Ethical Bean participates in community building charities and programs in all of their sourcing regions. During its roasting process, a special air roaster is used to not only control flavor profiles but to reduce energy consumption and emissions by 80%.
